What is Vaginismus?

Vaginismus is a problem of postponement and avoidance of sexual intercourse. It is often caused by psychological factors and can be resolved with the help of a healthcare professional together with the partner.

It is characterized by involuntary, uncontrollable contractions of the muscles surrounding the vagina, making sexual intercourse impossible.

Strict moral values, viewing sexuality as sinful, shameful, or dirty, and misinformation from the environment may lead to negative feelings and subconscious blockages regarding sexual activity.

It is important to teach women experiencing vaginismus to relax, become familiar with their bodies, and control their reactions. It cannot be resolved by willpower alone or through pressure from others; treatment is necessary.

Vaginismus should be seen as a problem of the couple, not just the woman. Determined efforts by both partners help to resolve the issue easily.

This problem can be effectively treated with a cognitive-behavioral therapy approach.
